Gastric volvulus is an uncommon clinical entity first described by Berti in 1886.8 He found a complete gastric volvulus during an autopsy examination. John Berg,6 in 1896, was the first to operate successfully for this condition, and Rosselet44,45 reported the first case of chronic gastric volvulus seen radiologically. The world literature contains about 200 cases of gastric volvulus, a third of which are acute. Many of these cases are not true gastric volvulus, but represent simply cascade or displaced stomachs.48 Because of the lack of familiarity with this entity, gastric volvulus is usually an unexpected finding at x-ray examination, operation, or autopsy.

Acute gastric volvulus is a surgical emergency47 of the first magnitude and, despite prompt and expert treatment, carries a high mortality rate.
