Gastric volvulus is an uncommon clinical entity first described by Berti in 1886.⁸ He found a complete gastric volvulus during an autopsy examination. John Berg,⁶ in 1896, was the first to operate successfully for this condition, and Rosselet^44,45 reported the first case of chronic gastric volvulus seen radiologically. The world literature contains about 200 cases of gastric volvulus, a third of which are acute. Many of these cases are not true gastric volvulus, but represent simply cascade or displaced stomachs.⁴⁸ Because of the lack of familiarity with this entity, gastric volvulus is usually an unexpected finding at x-ray examination, operation, or autopsy.

Acute gastric volvulus is a surgical emergency⁴⁷ of the first magnitude and, despite prompt and expert treatment, carries a high mortality rate.
