The objective of this project is the study of the relationship between fibrocystic disease and carcinoma of the breast. We divided our study into three parts: a microscopic study of fibrocystic disease preceding the development of carcinoma; of fibrocystic disease that did not eventuate as carcinoma in a minimal period of ten years, and the microscopic changes in breast tissue adjacent to carcinoma of the breast. The last group will be reported separately.

Our purpose is not the discovery of any possible statistical relationship but rather the micropathological characterization of the fibrocystic disease. It is our feeling that "fibrocystic disease" is too broad a concept or diagnosis for purposes of uncovering a possible relationship to carcinoma. Our goal is to observe the differences, if any, in the microscopic character of the fibrocystic disease that did or did not precede the development of carcinoma, and later to compare these with changes . . .
