Presenting as an Embolus to the Femoral Artery

Introduction

Intracardiac myxoma is a rare tumor, initial manifestations of which may be life-threatening or fatal. Peripheral embolization is one such manifestation which, if recognized and acted upon promptly, may lead to the successful treatment of this unusual disorder.

Less than 250 cases of intracardiac myxoma have been reported in the medical literature. Prichard¹ reviewed 128 cases in 1951, and in 1959 Padhi² added 90 more. Antemortem diagnosis of this tumor has been reported only during the last decade. The first successful removal of such a tumor was reported in March, 1955, by Crafoord,³ and since that time 50 or more additional cases have appeared in the literature. Silverman⁸ and associates reviewed embolization as a manifestation of intracardiac myxoma and reported a patient who succumbed to this complication.
