THOMAS H. HENDREN, MD; CREIGHTON A. HARDIN, MD

AMA Arch Surg. 1964;88(2):206-208.

Since this article does not have an abstract, we have provided the first 150 words of the full text PDF and any section headings.

The time of renal recovery following temporary cross-clamping of the remaining renal artery of a uninephrectomized dog under normothermic conditions is two hours.1 Longer periods of renal artery occlusion resulted in the death of the animals in four to five days from azotemia. The following experiment was done to evaluate the protective effect of low molecular weight dextran (LMD)* when the two-hour period of renal ischemia was extended.

Method

A right nephrectomy through a flank incision was done to eight dogs. Ten days later a laparotomy was done to this group of dogs. Arterial clamps were placed across the aorta distal to the superior mesenteric artery and at the origin of the left renal artery. The occluding clamps were left in place for 21/2 hours at normal body temperature. At the end of this time the occluding clamps were removed, blood flow was restored to the left kidney, and . . .
