Carcinoid Tumors of the Appendix

Acute appendicitis occurs with such frequency that other lesions of this organ are often forgotten or overlooked by the surgeon. In an attempt to add to the knowledge concerning the instance, behavior, and proper treatment of carcinoids of the vermiform appendix, a review of the cases of this condition occurring in three local hospitals was undertaken for the period 1950 through 1959.

According to Foreman,2 the first authenticated case of carcinoid of the appendix was reported by Berger in 1882. Reports on this tumor have appeared in the literature from time to time during the last 20 years. Foreman2 reported 19 cases of carcinoid of the appendix in young people, with an average age of 33 years in this group.
