Replies of members of the Western Surgical Association to a 1963 questionnaire on abdominal incisional management have served to indicate the broad outlines of current practice in this field. Tabulations of the responses of 291 abdominal surgeons who participated in the survey show the extent to which various celiotomy techniques seem to be favored at present and emphasize the existence of technical areas in dispute. The study would appear to be of significance in that its results reflect the experience of surgical groups widely distributed in this country.
A survey of current techniques in the management of abdominal incisions was conceived as a project having interest potential because of obvious divergences in present-day procedure. To establish a profile of practices in the Western Surgical Association, a form letter containing specific inquiries on incisional management was prepared and sent to members engaged in abdominal surgery.
