THE DANGERS in reducing large hernias that have "forfeited their right of domicile" have long been known to surgeons. Respiratory as well as circulatory failure may result from forceful reduction of the herniated viscera into a cavity too small to accommodate them. Goni Moreno¹ Koontz^2,3 and Mason⁴ have described the use of pneumoperitoneum as an aid in the preoperative management of gigantic hernias in adults. Spratt⁵ and Whelan⁶ each reported one case in which the second stage of omphalocele repair was successfully carried out with the preoperative use of pneumoperitoneum. The purpose of this report is to add another case of a second-stage repair of a large omphalocele treated preoperatively with pneumoperitoneum.

Report of Case

This child was normal at birth except for a large omphalocele. On Oct 23, 1957, two hours after her birth, the omphalocele was covered with skin. She did well post-operatively. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
