SCHISTOSOMIASIS mansoni and its late complications of portal hypertension with esophageal varices, and congestive splenomegaly with secondary hypersplenism have been well-documented in the literature.^1-6 The large numbers of patients presenting with this symptom complex in areas where the disease is endemic have led to the careful description of its pathogenesis, diagnosis, and surgical management. Although the disease has not been endemic in the United States, the frequency and ease of present-day world travel, coupled with the large influx of people into the United States from endemic areas such as Puerto Rico, require an awareness of the disease entity, and a knowledge of its proper management by American physicians.
