THE YEARS 1948-1958 contain a small but impressive literature associating the postgastrectomy state with pulmonary tuberculosis.^1-12 This literature in the main emanates from outside the United States.^1-9 One may find that 3% of tuberculous patients have the scar of gastric surgery¹ and in reverse it is stated that 2% of postgastrectomy patients may develop tuberculosis.¹⁰ Concern has been expressed regarding the form that the tuberculosis may take; a 25% mortality is reported.¹⁰ The pulmonary lesions are described as far advanced with a large pneumonic component.^10,11

During the past 15 to 20 years gastrectomy has been more frequently used in the care of peptic ulcers and chest x-ray films have become a part of routine care and population study.
