A SYMPOSIUM on tissue adhesives in surgery was held at the Hotel Vienna Intercontinental, Vienna, on Sept 1 and 2, 1967. The symposium was organized by Prof R. Gottlob, Department of Experimental Surgery, University Clinic, Vienna.

The purpose of this report is to summarize the general knowledge of the papers and comments presented by investigators from various countries with particular interest in the field of general surgery. Only the names of the first authors are used. Coauthors' names are not referred to in this paper.

General

Different adhesives were discussed in this meeting: epoxide, polyurethane, resorcin-gelatin-adhesive, and cyanoacrylate tissue adhesives.

Cooper (United States), Lemperle (Germany), and Richling (Austria) reported on using gelatin with resorcin added as a polymerizing agent. They independently used this material experimentally in bonding of wounds of the skin in rats and injuries to livers, kidneys, and small blood vessels.
