Vx-2 carcinoma is a laboratory tumor, the product of the papilloma of the cottontail rabbit. Shope¹ in 1933 demonstrated a virus as a causative agent. In 1935 Rous and Beard² reported the progression of papillomas to carcinoma in domestic rabbits. It was subsequently shown that a squamous cell carcinoma derived from this tumor could be readily transplanted. Rous and his co-workers³ in 1946 noted the loss of viral dependency of the tumor and demonstrated the absence of complement-fixing antibody in these rabbits. Vx-2 carcinoma has since been free of viral characteristics and remains a readily transmissible laboratory tumor. The present investigation was designed to use this tumor to produce a simulated colon cancer, to study the natural history of this tumor in this setting, and to evaluate different methods which could be applied in treating this form of cancer.
